Finding Center

I feel like I'm turning some corners in my photo stuff lately. The work is showing the growing pains of transition, but I have an idea where I'm going. Sunday's shoot with model Manfred Louis was great. There's something that happens when learning to ride a bike, making pots on a wheel, or snow boarding, where suddenly, you just get it. You find that balance; the center, and then that thing never leaves you. You can't figure out how you suddenly got it, or remember what it was like not to have, but once you do, it's there; you're there. That's what happened with me and my studio lighting this weekend. Suddenly, the geometry made sense and I got balanced. I've been winging it up till now; hit or miss; working like a fool to get the lighting right. A few shots will be okay and many will be bad; wrong. This shoot was different. I spent most of the afternoon the day before practicing and set up a scenario. When the model was there on Sunday, the scenario worked fine, so all I had to do was small tweaks and I could focus on the model more....

Manfred brought a make up artist who I ended up loving. He's from the Bronx who went to Art and Design High School. He's really good; easy to work with. He was very helpful throughout the shoot and had a great manner with the model. We will work together again for sure. I did the styling for the shoot myself, and let the makeup artist do his own concepts for some close ups so he could experiment with some artistic ideas for his book. We had a blast and everyone left happy. Yay.

Milk Gallery: Nigel Barker

Last night I was invited last minute to go to Nigel Barker's photography opening at Milk Gallery. Cool scene. The photos were beautiful-- photo journalistic work from Haiti. The opening doubled as a charity event to raise money for a Haitian relief fund.... Juxtaposed to that was the NY fashion scene in the flesh. Well known stylists and models I recognized from magazines and various fashion related TV shows... (photos via camera phone; much nicer in person :)

SRP

Sheryl Roberts-Penson reconnected with me for a studio shoot this past weekend. Always love working with Sheryl; she's a pro but also very genuine and tons of fun to work with. Style by Donna Jaye, from Sheryl's own wardrobe. Hair and makeup by Sheryl herself.

Omega and back...

I had a WONDERFUL time on my retreat at Omega. Words can't describe what a special time it was. For starters, the environment is awesome. The workshop with Dennis Stock was incredible as usual(I learned allot; I adore him as a teacher and friend), and all the other things around Omega were inspiring as always; African dancers, drumming, poetry workshops, music, organic food, etc. I could sit here and blog for hours about each thing...

When I got back I had the photo walk with actor Kit Williamson. We did a variety of characters around Greenwich Village and Central Park. We almost melted in the heat, but had a great time.

Bootcamp

Lined up a shoot with actor Kit Williamson. I photographed him a couple months back and now he wants another shoot... Just found out he did a Tony nominated play called Talk Radio starring Leib Schrieber, and is also working on a project being headed up Kevin Spacey. He's very nice and great to work with. Looking forward to this!

Also this week...
Photo published in Time Out New York magazine.
Album release for rapper J. Skywalker, for which I did photos and cover design.... Off to my Photography boot camp with photographer Dennis Stock at Omega Institute tomorrow... Got 30 of my photos printed 11x14 for my portfolio critique-- turned out great. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and how true the color is. It's truly satisfying to see stuff in print.

Packing and getting ready to go :)

Peace out.. hope everyone is peachy.

Dennis Stock, my teacher with whom I'm studying again in 2 weeks at the retreat...
I feel so blessed to work with him. He's truly a brilliant man and artist.

Happiness

Read this today:

The secret to happiness is not getting what you want, but wanting what you get.

hmmmm. I like this; sums up simply as gratitude and appreciation for what's in front of you. I guess the caveat is not confusing this with complacency if there is more to be achieved or enjoyed in life; not confusing this practice as 'settling'. Of course, being grateful in the moment is what allows our current vibration to enhance enough to go the next level of getting what we get, right?

Laura

My friend Laura came over for an informal shoot for her birthday this weekend. Laura thinks of herself as not that comfy in front of the camera, so I had to catch her at unexepected moments. We had fun with clothes, makeup, music, and a lot of good laughs. She said it's so much work, she now understands why Kate Moss is a coke head. (With apologies to Ms Moss. lol.) Later, we went out to dinner and talked about the usual crap over pink foofey drinks; boys, work, money, dreams. It was like a Sex and the City episode minus 2 friends.

It might have been the first installment to my 'holistic photography' plan... Taking a normal person and modeling them up... It was easy with her tho... She's a natural beauty and quick to smile, so my job wasn't difficult at all. I like a couple of the photos so much, I put them in my portfolio with the *real* models :) Thanks to Laura for the fun shoot !

On Makeup Magazine

A very wonderful makeup artist friend from LA called me out of the blue yesterday to ask to do an emergency photography project for her... She has a makeup store here in NYC -Makeup Mania- that's being featured in what is the supposedly the 'Vogue' of the makeup art world On Makeup Magazine. She is thrilled but was panicking because she needs some beautiful photos of the store for the story. She's asked me to do it; is paying me nicely and giving me a credit in the magazine. I'm a little worried about it, because people- not buildings- are really my cup of tea, but I'm open to the challenge!

Punch List

Just not so good lately at blogging... I've just been going at a break neck speed. Oh well, I'll do my best. Today I think I'll do a list:
• 2nd Heesun shoot on Sunday-- went very well
• Sent painting to an exhibit I was invited to be in-- it's lost in the mail. Envisioning it coming back.
• Had lunch today w/ a stylist I met at FIT. She's leaving to go back to London in two weeks.. Will miss her!
• Looking forward to Omega and photo workshop coming up in July.

Catch Up

Been away from this blog for long enough and figured I better circle back and get caught up before I lose my way... had a nice, restful Memorial Day weekend and got caught up on the little stuff that's been neglected... Feels good.

The last couple of weeks had a couple of shoots.. The first was with Sheryl Roberts-Penson, a national commercial print model, whom most of us have seen on tv or in print, modeling for Target, L'Oreal, Macy's, Speigal, etc. The day was so much fun. We started the day going thru things in her magnificent closet of items to create a somewhat 'ethnic bohemian' look; something different from her commercial shoots... I look forward to working with her again! I'm grateful.

For last week's shoot, I did another project with HBO Def Poet Shanelle Gabriel at my house. I brought a stylist in that I met at FIT and we had a blast.. Donna, the stylist, brought a ton of clothes and created many different looks for Shanelle... I think it went really well... Still have yet to go thru all the photos and do editing, and have yet to get feedback from the girls, but overall I think we did good...

A Good Thing...

The Martha Stewart experience yesterday was really great... My friend did very well and the whole thing was fun and exciting. It was inspiring to see to say the least... Martha was much more warm, and personable than I would have thought, even coming over to say hello to us without being prompted or guided by a producer or assistant... I got to photograph Martha who graciously posed for me, which was cool. I was impressed with the whole vibe of the show.

Art House

Trying to collect myself after several shoots in a short period of time. Guess I was doing too much, because I wound up with a nice little classic head cold. Came home last night and did nothing but sleep. I'm in the process of scheduling more shoots and am trying to appease people but also space the days out so I don't end up overwhelmed.

I did a big editorial shoot on Sunday which was both positive and a bit chaotic. Busy day, and I made some nice connections- everyone was great and had I blast working with all of them.. We got some nice pics and I hope to work with some of them again. The big upside for me is I got to shoot with original Jasper Johns and Robert Raushenbergs as backgrounds to the models. Cool experience.

If you build it...

My lights arrived, and the same day I landed my first paid gig in my new studio... It's not a crazy amount of money, but it's enough to pay for half of my light purchase! The shoot will happen in a few weeks. The situation is interesting. It's a friend of a friend's 18 year old daughter who's visiting NYC to create a modeling portfolio... Her mother sent me a really nice email along with some details and we're putting together some concepts via email. I'm happy and grateful for this development.

Let there be Light(s)

I've been roosting on some money I set aside to buy professional strobe lights typically used in studio photography... I've tried to work around acquiring these because I've found them somewhat intimidating. They require a certain amount of technical know how, and just seem daunting. The weird thing is that when all the settings are correct and the exposure and placement is good, they are easy as pie to use.

Well, anyway, I bought them today! They will arrive next week, along with Pocket Wizards (wireless devices) and a light meter. I've had this mentality that I don't want lack of 'proper' equipment to get in my way of meeting my potential. I used to do that; try to do things with jerry-rigged stuff, outdated or used machines, and I still have some of that spirit, but I learned that when you invest in yourself and get what you need, the Universe follows suit. Years ago I bought brand new Mac with all the updated stuff for it. As a student, I always had an old one or a hand-me-down, and was constantly fighting issues of incompatibility or applications that didn't do some edgy task I needed to do. After all, I had everything I needed at school, why would I need it at home? But, home was where I did my personal stuff; the old equipment was always my excuse for not moving forward (I realize now.) Interestingly, the minute I bought a new, loaded computer for personal, I had an out-of-the-blue design job offer that changed the course of life.

I used to feel 'guilt' about spending money on things, a trait I inherited from my Depression baby grandmother. At that time, though, I realized there's a difference between 'buying things' and investing in yourself. If there's a tool you need whether it's a fancy sable paint brush, a great website, musical instrument, camera, or whatever.. Get it, buy it, get on with it! I now keep myself equipped with updated tools. It makes a difference in many ways.

I'm so excited about the big girl lights. Can't wait!

Busy Bees...

Still reflecting on my set up and visualizing the next steps... On the technical end, I'm not thrilled with my current lighting... I've been using wireless speed lights ala the Strobist technique and it's just not turning out to be what I want... After tossing and turning for two nights, I have decided I'm going to invest in the 'big girl' lights and go for professional strobes. I've been afraid of them even though I took a lighting class, and have used them a couple of times since. I'm going for it, and if I have them in my own house I can practice and get use to them. I've decided on Alien Bees. They make them in hot pink, which of course will be my color choice :)

re-defined.

My first shoot in the home studio was today with Korean rapper Heesun, for her new album re-defined. A little touch and go with the lighting, but I'll get it somehow.. We did okay though; we made it work. Every shoot is a learning experience. The apartment was full of people and everyone was really nice and got along great.. Shanelle (my HBO Def Poet friend and client) was here and told me she wants me to work on her next album (!) Turned out the producer 'Rock' is the brother to one of my friends at work.. Small world :)

I'm grateful for this day.
