Happy to participate in the annual ArtBridge benefit auction here in NYC. Event takes place on May 2nd, but items are already up for bid on paddle8.com, for the next 2 weeks. Check it out to support ArtBridge, an organization dedicated to bringing art into the public sphere by transforming sidewalk bridges into temporary exhibition sites of work by emerging artists.

My auction item 'Dreamscape' is a framed 14"x14" framed c-print 1/15.. I'm also including a piece from my 'Crosswalks' series. Bid on these and all artist works here:

cherub alert

Took the train to Syracuse this past weekend to visit my wonderful friend Tara Hogan of ink + wit, and met her little ones for the first time. Never aspired to be a child photographer, but if it's this easy sign me up! These little dolls stole my heart...  Catching up with Tara, seeing the winter landscape from the train, and staying in a charming Arts & Crafts era inn, made for a much needed break from NYC.

timeless...

This little girl waded shyly by herself, watching the other kids running in and out of the fountain at Washington Square but seemed reluctant to join in... At one point she approached the fountain, stood with this victorious gesture like she had just landed from a perfect back flip, bowed her head and then waded away. I was grateful for her taking this stance and happy to catch it.

crosswalks in 'another new york'

I've been photographing figures in crosswalks on and off for the past few years, and more frequently since last October. I'm very happy to have five included in ArtBridge's Another New York  at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn; curated by Mickalene Thomas and Jon Feinstein. Sponsored by Aperture Foundation.  Opening today (July 9)

Crosswalks compel me visually with their strong, graphic presence on New York City streets... On a daily basis, I use a shoot from the hip approach to capture these trusty black and white stripes we seek while walking thru congested streets, coupled with the blurred motion of unaware figures on a mission. I see crosswalks as an oasis for the urban pedestrian, but also as a zone for a competitive, hustle and bustle, body-as-vehicle New York lifestyle.  -WW

jenna black

Yogi, activist, and holistic strategist Jenna Marie Black and I met this past weekend in Central Park for a little visual story telling session..  (aka photo shoot!) Jenna was a joy to have in front of the lens... Still testing the D7100, and Jenna's goals were some personal branding images for websites, social media, etc. After some 'business-y' head shots, yoga poses, and some golden hour favorite dress shots, our last stop at Strawberry Field. There the 'Mayor of Strawberry Field' -who is known for his daily floral design on the 'Imagine' mosaic- invited Jenna to be part of his day's arrangement.  Both being devout John Lennon fans, kindred spirits were in their element and photos were flying like long lost friends. So much fun...

another new york

I'm very pleased to have five photos included in Artbridge's installation 'Another New York'.  Works will be large scale and exhibited starting July 9 outside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

miss ida blue at ella lounge

I got a Nikon D7100 this past week, which I took for a maiden voyage down Avenue A, to a sweet little jazz club called 'Ella Lounge'... Featured were my friends Miss Ida Blue, who did not disappoint with their incredible toasty, vintage, bluesy, jazzy tunes.. The camera is on trial right now, but after shooting at ISO 6400 in a darkly lit club -and getting these results- I think she might be a keeper. I still have much to learn as far as controlling this new rig, but it will come along in time. The daunting low light situation was a great place to start. All photos © wendy whitesell 2013

outta the woods...

After a very long week for our country as a whole and the city of Boston, it was refreshing to go do some creative work in New Jersey today with model Manfred Louis. Style by Lynette Ware....  All photos © wendy whitesell 2013

dennis stock @ MILK gallery

Recently I visited the new retrospective at Milk Gallery for Magnum Photographer Dennis Stock... I had the very great fortune of having Dennis as teacher and  friend before his death in 2010. I studied in photography workshops with him during the summers of 2007, 2008 and 2009, and had the honor of being his assistant in the last workshop I attended. Dennis was a remarkable, brilliant, and wonderfully cantankerous man, with a wicked sense of humor, and a heart the size of the world. His passion for photography was incredibly infectious and pure, and informed during the golden age of photography to which he was also a major contributor like his extraordinary teachers-  Henri Cartier Bresson, Gjon Mili, and W. Egene Smith. Consistently through his lens, he showed his great love for humanity; always finding the beauty and dignity in his subjects. The installation was fabulous. Hats off to MILK and Magnum.

miss ida blue

Went to the Freddie's Back Room 10 year anniversary party last night and got a few shots of  resident band 'Miss Ida Blue'. The phenomenal vocals of Mara Kaye and toasty tones of Jim Friar on trombone warmed everyone's spirit on a cold January night. I was testing a Nikon D600.  All photos © wendy whitesell 2013

urban landscape

Many thanks to the Center for Fine Art Photography for taking the time to send me images from their 'Urban Landscape' exhibit. It was an honor to be selected by the juror and I really appreciate them documenting the installation for participating photographers. Very thoughtful, C4FAP! — at The Center for Fine Art Photography

Jill Greenberg's Horses at Milk Gallery

Once again, I had the opportunity to see Jill Greenberg's work firsthand, this time at an opening and book signing at MILK Gallery in NYC's Meatpacking district. As a person who spent over ten years of my childhood on a horse farm (and an aspiring photographer, myself), I really appreciated not only the quality of these images, but the animals' soulful nature and vulnerability she manages to capture and illustrate so beautifully.
